When things feel heavy

When things feel heavy

Witnessing the unrest, violence, and conflict in the world is a heavy burden to carry. Coupled with the many heavy layers of constant media commentary, the complexity of political and religious leanings within your own networks of family, friends, and coworkers, and the fear of the unknown.

Sometimes, we carry collective weight, grief, and despair that extends far beyond the walls of our private homes and lives.

I just wanted to pop in and simply name that. It’s a lot. It’s sad, and worrisome, and disheartening.

In my role as a therapist, I’ve often given my clients some tangible “do-nows” when dealing with crises, and our country this week is, simply put, in crisis.

So, here are a few tips from me to you to help lighten the load this week:

  • Get grounded. Staying informed is important, but drowning in the noise isn’t helpful to you or your loved ones. Turn off the TV, put down your phone, and be intentional about connecting with the physical instead of the digital for at least one hour a day. Sit outside for a meal if you can, or go on a walk, enjoy your choice of exercise, or simply stretch for five minutes. It’s a balm to a busy mind to move your body.

  • Write down your thoughts. Instead of pent-up fear, anger, or sadness, put pen to paper and process. Help yourself move through your thoughts and feelings by tangibly expressing them. You don’t have to share those thoughts or words with anyone else!

  • Take an action step that aligns with your values. Even small steps matter. Check in on a friend who's struggling, volunteer a few hours in your local community, or donate if you're able. Turning care into action reminds us that, even in difficult times, we have the power to create a little more light and that we are not powerless in the face of the pain and suffering around us.

I hope this helps you today. We are in this together!

With love,

Jen
